June is the time to learn about the vocal abilities of the various species of wild life. Alarm calls of birds protecting young can be almost deafening but it allows for easier identification when we can see who is making all the noise. The hysterical screech of the blackbird, or the frantic chipping of the wren will soon tell us if there is a cat or crow about. Grey squirrels also have a remarkable repertoire for communicating danger, or seeing off a rival.

Found along the waterside are the oldest of all insects — the dragonfly. Fossilised remains found in coal strata reveal that enormous dragonflies with a wingspan of more than 27 inches patrolled the prehistoric swamps of the Carboniferous Period. Although this amazing creature rarely lives for more than a month, it can reach speeds of up to 50-60 miles an hour and can detect prey at a distance of 40 yards away. Despite appearances, its large gauzy wings are colourless. They glisten in the sun and this effect harmonises with the insect’s brightly coloured body to produce those brilliant flashes of green, blue and gold. In folklore the dragonfly was referred to as the ‘sewing needle’, or ‘devil’s darning needle’, because it was believed to be able to fly into a person’s ear and sew it up! It was thought to be in league with adders and warn them of approaching danger.
